Can A Leaf Blower Be Used To Clean A Dryer Vent?

A leaf blower can only be used as a maintenance step between professional dyer vent cleanings, it may help to blow loose lint out but it is absolutely insufficient to perform a thorough cleaning that will help to prevent a fire. Most of the time, a leaf blower can cause hidden clogs that restrict the air flow completely because it compacts lint and debris.

A leaf blower uses high-velocity air to move debris, but it lacks the physical agitation needed to remove all lint that is attached to the interior walls of the dryer vent which is a humid environment where lint can become dense and heavy.

Using a leaf blower can lead to several unintended consequences:

  • Vent Damage: High air pressure can rupture fragile flexible foil or plastic ducting, or  cause rigid sections to disconnect inside walls.
  • Hidden Clogs: If the vent is heavily blocked, the blower might compact the lint further like a snowball, creating a more severe obstruction.
  • Indoor Mess: If the blower is not perfectly sealed to the vent or if a disconnect occurs, lint and dust can blow back into your home or wall cavities.
  • Fire Hazards: Disconnected vents can leak hot, moist, lint-filled air (and carbon monoxide from gas dryers) directly into your walls, creating a major fire risk.
